Spacon & X designs the sleek Gamar furniture range Wed, 24 Nov 2021 06:00:00 +0000

Danish architecture and design studio Spacon & X collaborated with German brand e15 to create this collection of furniture for POPL restaurant in Copenhagen, which is made of distinctive grained ash wood.

Spacon & X was commissioned to create the interior of the POPL restaurant in the Christianshavn district of Copenhagen, including a range of bespoke wooden furniture.

Spacon & X designed the interiors of the POPL restaurant in Copenhagen

The studio worked with Frankfurt-based e15 to produce the Gamar chair and stool, which are shortlisted in the seating design category of the 2021 Dezeen Awards.

POPL is the latest addition to the Noma family of restaurants and is run by a group of former employees of the famous restaurant established in 2004.

The restaurant has a warm and cozy aesthetic

Spacon & X’s simple design for the bespoke chair, stool, tables and valet contributes to a holistic interior layout with a warm, understated aesthetic that reflects Noma’s signature style.

“We have always admired Noma’s approach to its products – from the individual ingredients to the holistic experience, each element demonstrates great attention to detail,” said architect and partner of Spacon & X, Malene Hvidt.

The furniture collection was called Gamar

“This is also how we approached the design of POPL and the conception of bespoke furniture in the space; with attention and care for details and with the aim of recreating the warm welcome for which Noma is so well known. “, added.

The Gamar chair and stool designed for POPL features a simple archetypal structure influenced by Shaker furniture, as well as traditional Nordic and Japanese furniture making techniques.

Spacon & X chose to produce the furniture from heart ash, which has a golden color that contrasts with the strong brown grain of the base wood.

The wood comes from the Odenwald forest near Frankfurt and is finished with a matt transparent lacquer which accentuates the grain.

“For me, the goal of this project is the use of natural materials and craftsmanship,” added Philipp Mainzer, co-founder of e15. “This is very much in line with the approach of our work at e15.”

The chair was the starting point from which the rest of the collection evolved. It combines thick and sturdy rods used for the feet with flat elements for the seat, back and bracing elements.

On the back of the chair, the cylindrical legs extend through the seat and fit neatly into semi-circular grooves that are milled into the solid backrest.

The design of the bar stool features the same elements as the chair, with elongated legs and an added footrest.

Grooves have been milled into the backrest to accommodate structural supports

The valet features a chunky horizontal rod supported by simple legs, while the tables feature a pedestal base and Richlite surfaces – a durable composite of recycled paper and organic resin.

As part of the restaurant, the furnishings are complemented by fitted joinery in a similar minimal style, as well as exposed brick and concrete surfaces that introduce other textural elements.

e15 was established in 1995 and has grown into one of the leading manufacturers of premium furniture created by renowned architects and designers.

The company worked with British architect David Chipperfield on products including a collection of minimalist furniture made from simple planks of wood and a modular workstation made using traditional carpentry techniques.

The firm also collaborated with New York designer David Weeks to create a wooden toy that resembles the Bigfoot, and invited students from Swiss university ÉCAL to create objects based on its Backenzahn tooth-shaped stool.

Chemically recycled EPS packaging used by a high-end designer furniture manufacturer Fri, 19 Nov 2021 13:55:17 +0000

While we don’t often talk about expandable polystyrene (EPS) foam beads, it’s worth noting that this material — often vilified as “non-recyclable” – is made, in part, with chemically recycled PS and is now used commercially by Ekornes, a Norwegian manufacturer of high-end designer furniture. Ekorne’s use of BASF’s Styropor Ccycled EPS represents the first project in Scandinavia that contributes to the sustainability strategy of all companies by using protective packaging made from chemically recycled plastic waste.

Since November 2021, Ekornes has been using EPS protective packaging which has a lower carbon footprint than virgin materials while preserving the same properties. This is achieved by replacing fossil resources with raw materials recycled at the start of production. BASF supplies Styropor Ccycled to Vartdal Plast, which converts the material into molded packaging parts for Ekornes’ Stressless furniture brand.

Due to its manufacturing process, Styropor Ccycled would have the same properties as conventional Styropor. This maintains the excellent packaging properties such as exceptional shock absorption and high compressive strength, which are essential for the protection of sophisticated designer furniture. In the manufacture of packaging foams so famous for 70 years, pyrolysis oil replaces fossil raw materials.

BASF sources its oil from technology partners who use a thermochemical process called pyrolysis to transform post-consumer plastic waste that would otherwise be used for energy recovery or landfilled into this secondary raw material. BASF then uses the oil at the very beginning of the value chain to manufacture new plastics and other products. As the recycled and fossil raw materials are mixed in production and cannot be distinguished from each other, the recycled part is attributed to Styropor Cycled using a mass balance approach. The award process and the product itself have been certified by an independent auditor. Compared to conventional Styropor, at least 50% CO2 is registered in the production of Styropor Ccycled.

As for Vartdal Plast, Styropor Ccycled brings many advantages because the product is identical to the virgin material. Therefore, the production process does not need to be adjusted. The company and its products are certified according to ecoloop certification program, confirming that for the products, 100% recycled material was used as raw material. Vartdal Plast Product Manager Mounir El’Mourabit said: “We are delighted to be working with BASF and Ekornes on this project. It is a testament to our mutual commitment to a more sustainable future.

According to Klaus Ries, head of BASF’s Styrenic business in Europe, “Current environmental policy focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, conserving fossil resources and avoiding or using waste. By using the products of our ChemCycling project, our partner Ekornes actively contributes to the recovery of plastics after their use phase and their reinsertion into the material loop.

  • Best methods of molding undercuts

Producing plastic parts with undercuts presents distinct challenges for moulders.

  • The business advantage of sustainability

Companies promote their commitment to sustainability in a variety of ways, but underneath the promises and promotional material there must be a genuine corporate commitment to sustainability goals that deliver significant environmental, economic and social benefits.

  • K 2013 preview: injection molding

Next month’s massive triennial plastics trade fair in Düsseldorf, Germany challenges injection molding machine builders to demonstrate technological leadership to meet market needs.

Pre-loved Nordic furniture takes a cultural twist – the New Indian Express Tue, 16 Nov 2021 02:20:00 +0000

Express news service

How many times have you logged into Pinterest and looked at Nordic furniture, only to be disappointed that you couldn’t find similar pieces in India? Thanks to Abhishek Chaudhry, founder of Embassy Goods, you can now access pre-loved designs with an international aesthetic. Chaudhry mentions that the idea of selling second-hand goods and movable property from foreign embassies and expatriates residing in Delhi was a fluke.

While working at a diagnostic center in Vasant Vihar in 2012, he went to the US embassy in the city to deliver a medical report to an expatriate who was leaving the country. During the conversation, the expatriate brought up the need to sell his goods.

Intrigued by the idea of selling premium products at nominal prices, Chaudhry bought all of the products. Subsequently, through word of mouth, other expatriates leaving the country began to contact him. This simple expense turned into a full time business. “It would never have happened if I had sent a messenger to the embassy instead of going there myself,” he said.

Options galore

Embassy Goods started on social networking site Facebook (now Meta) in 2015. Chaudhry started with a warehouse at CR Park; he now has one in Ghitorni and a showroom in Sector 6, Noida.

Although the first products he sold were electronic gadgets, his company now sells all kinds of furniture, trundle beds from Korea, recliners from the UK, from baby changing tables to dollhouses and even Lego sets.

A self-taught pianist and golfer, two of Chaudhry’s favorite products are used pianos and golf kits.
Selling products at 50 percent less than the original cost price is their distinguishing feature. Chaudhry makes sure that the goods are in perfect condition.

“I avoid buying furniture to renovate. My goal is to buy and sell goods that I would like to see at home,” he shares. With 14 employees, Chaudhry also sells used and new Ikea products (the Swedish furniture giant) to Indian buyers and to the city’s embassies.

The crowd favorite

Chaudhry’s usual clientele are young couples looking to furnish their homes at minimal cost. Amit Kumar, a 42-year-old businessman from Faridabad, talks about a recently purchased gym table and equipment: “Getting top-of-the-line products at such a low cost is always a plus. In addition, Abhishek makes sure that the goods are in top condition so that most people don’t even realize they are second-hand. “

Chaudhry shares that, on several occasions, customers are willing to wait for him to purchase certain products.

He also says that with such a huge demand for signature goods in the city, Embassy Goods often holds virtual auctions twice a week on its Facebook page and invites buyers to bid. “I get affordable and unique products with one click and that’s the best part about Embassy Goods. I never had a problem with the products I liked, Embassy Goods rather helped me choose quality over quantity ”, concludes Randeep Raina (45) from Faridabad.
