New Delhi, December 4 (IANSlife): Christie’s New York announced a series of design auctions in December, showcasing an unrivaled selection of masterpieces from big names in 20th and 21st century art, architecture and design.
A group of five remarkable Harry Bertoia sculptures from Florence Knoll Bassett’s private collection spotlight Design’s direct sale, offering a rare view of the interaction between artist and patron, designer and supporter. “Coupe lamp with two figures” and the “Big Leaf” floor lamp by Alberto Giacometti, from the collection of a member of the Matisse family “, are both on display at Christie’s.
The important old glass by Emile Galle and Daum from the collection of Dr Thomas Chua illustrates the first half of the 20th century. The estate of Ruth S. Stanton, another important collection on the sale, provides a rare opportunity to view famous creations by French master cabinetmaker Jean Royere, including stunning straw marquetry and models of the much sought-after “Ripples” and ‘Crisscross’ series. A superb “Polar Bear” living room suite is one of the artist’s other masterpieces.
The auction also includes works by Eugène Printz, Alexandre Noll, Jean Prouve and Charlotte Perriand, as well as a very important set of furniture by André Groult, ironwork by Albert Cheuret and rare pieces by Eugène Printz, Alexandre Noll, Jean Prouve, and Charlotte Perriand.
Notable works by Les Lalanne from the second half of the 20th century include a “Moutons de Laine” and two Ottomans, a “Carpe d’Or” by François-Xavier Lalanne and a magnificent “Crocosat” chair by Claude Lalanne. The estate of Debbie and Bud Menin ushers in the late 20th and early 21st centuries with contemporary glass pieces by great Americans William Morris and Dan Dailey, among others.

Tiffany, an auction dedicated to Louis Comfort Tiffany, Tiffany Studios and the company that inspired the art of glassmaking, will take place on December 10 at Christie’s Design in New York City. The auction will feature a spectacular “Apple Blossom” table lamp, a masterpiece from the Silverman Collection; an antique and rare “Elaborate Peony” table lamp from the collection of Dr. Robert B. Koehl; an extraordinary ‘Clematis’ floor lamp; and a majestic table lamp with seven lights on a rare silvered bronze “Arch and leaf” base. Several unusual desk sets from a large private collection are also included in the sale.
Dr Thomas Chua’s collection is highlighted by an impressive ‘Laburnum’ lamppost, a spectacular ‘Witness to the Divine’ landscape window designed by Tiffany Studios for the Unity Church in Springfield, Massachusetts, and a complementary window ‘Where Does My Help Come From’ by The Church Glass and Decorating Company of New York, among others.
