From passive solar to innovative materials: the Salamander group | enchanted houses

Roots of alternative and passive solar construction

The evolution of the work of Patrick O’Brien and The Salamander Group (TSG) has spanned decades, designs and materials. For O’Brien, curiosity played a part in driving him from building conventional homes in the city of Detroit to exploring alternative construction in the unconventional countryside of Taos. A copy of “The Straw Bale House” and a desire to live in a small town in the mountains inspired Patrick, his wife and young son to put down roots here. In 1995 they purchased land in Two Peaks and built the first of many straw bale homes which the company would begin designing and building in 1999; theirs was off the grid.
