Hydro’s short-haul low-carbon aluminum in Vestre’s new furniture…

Furniture manufacturer Vestre is now opening the world’s most eco-friendly furniture factory, The Plus, in Magnor, Norway. Over 23 tons of Hydro CIRCAL low carbon aluminum have been delivered for the project. Hydro CIRCAL is made of at least 75% recycled aluminum, coming from products that have already lived a long time like a soda can, a car part or another material.

“The glass facades are specially developed for The Plus to ensure maximum transparency and the lowest possible energy consumption. The WICONA profiles that frame the glass are delivered using Hydro CIRCAL alloys,” says Frank Føleide, Sales Engineer at Hydro Building Systems.

The Plus aims to reduce energy requirements by at least 90% compared to similar conventional factory buildings. With more than 2,000 square meters of glazed facades – up to 14 meters high – the requirements in terms of energy performance, insulation, thermal bridges and building physics in general are extreme.

The Plus de Vestre offers an open and efficient workflow, while allowing all four factory wings to be in direct contact with the forest. In the center of the building is the Experience Center, which offers a 360 degree view of the entire production process.

Sustainability and inclusion guided all aspects of the plant, from designing working conditions to facilitating electrified heavy transport and managing the surrounding forest areas. The factory aims to become a global showcase for sustainable and highly efficient production.

“We can’t wait to open the doors of The Plus. It will be the people’s factory. It will be a factory for locals, Norwegians and the rest of the world. This is not only a big event for Vestre, but also for mainland Norwegian industry and Scandinavian export cooperation,” said Stefan Tjust, CEO of Vestre.

The Plus also used aluminum inside. From Hydro’s extrusion plant in Magnor, a stone’s throw from the new factory in Vestre, the material has been delivered for the stair railings that architecturally connect the floors of The Plus.

“We are happy to be able to contribute to such a future-oriented project as The Plus de Vestre. We have already collaborated with Vestre for many years, especially with the “Folk” furniture series, and we are delighted to now have the most environmentally friendly furniture factory in the world as a neighbor in Magnor”, says Morten Bråten, CEO of Hydro Magnor.
