Text description provided by the architects. Canopy Garden celebrates its visible condition by being as open and transparent as possible. The building was nothing more than a double slab of multi-axial pigmented concrete, floating above the garden. A very light feeling produced by the shell structure creates a series of seats on the roof which also shapes the ground floor space as the extension of the garden itself.

Built as a commercial garden in the middle of a compact residence that has an extremely high thermal environment of Bekasi (35 Celsius), Tanatap Canopy Garden, like many of Tanatap’s other experimental commercial garden designs, uses this particular location to prove a point that, regardless of the challenge of the macro environment, a low-energy passive commercial design would still be feasible and cost-effective in the tropical developing country.

The whole ambiance is largely inspired by the weave series of existing tropical almond tree canopies, contrasting with its color tones and open layout that allows air to circulate throughout the unit. “We wanted the design to seamlessly blend the indoor and outdoor living experience and extend the view towards the vast garden fields while remaining low-tech but acting as a bold backdrop to the landscapes,” says Antonius Richard, director of RAD+ar. The entire visitor experience of the Canopy Garden is largely organized through a series of playful harmonies of different spatial levelings, natural lighting on colors and shades, integrated architectural furnishings and sound unique interior.

The juxtaposition of the multiaxial pigmented concrete element and the translucent elements of the two floors has enhanced the outward views over the tropical almond garden, making this elegant gathering space the perfect place to pause, unwind and relax.

RAD+ar has been optimized for a bespoke experimental tropical experience. The interior-exterior concept is integrated by a series of shades of floating concrete that create a different atmosphere at each hour, obtained by seamlessly extending the roof-ceiling elements touching the existing tree canopies, invites a unique experience for visitors to dance among the tropical almond-shaped canopies. The open layout creates an efficient flow of interior units and an interaction between the bar, the common table and the circulations.

True to Tanatap’s vision of decentralizing sustainable buildings through sustainable enterprises, in developing countries like Indonesia, the design is committed to welcoming a creative community into its gallery-commercial garden setting.
