Who is the latest upholstery manufacturer to come to North Carolina?

Ekornes adds movement to its upholstery lines in North Carolina.

MORGANTON, NC – Due to high customer demand, I Ekornes’ The Morganton US plant will now add assembly of Ekornes Inc.’s two popular power recliners to its daily production. Ekornes makes the move after two years of producing its famous Mike and Max Stressless branded recliners at the Ekornes factory in Thailand.

North America accounts for 25% of global sales volume, the largest market for Norwegian company Ekornes, which manufactures Scandinavian style seats, according to the company.

“We couldn’t be more excited to bring Stressless recliner assembly to the United States,” said Peter Bjerregaard, President of Ekornes Inc. “Until now, we only had the capacity than Stressless sofas and Stressless dining chairs, and this key decision will significantly reduce our delivery times for these two popular Stressless recliners.Introduced in 2020 to our retail partners, the Stressless Mike and Max have quickly become certain of our best-selling power recliners.

The move is part of a major capacity expansion in the United States aimed at increasing the growth of the company’s North American business and reducing product delivery times to consumers. The expansion gives the company the opportunity to add Stressless recliners to its North American capacity.

“Expanding Morganton will allow us to be our retailers’ best partner for the future,” said Bjerregaard. “With a strong calendar of annual sales events and continued national marketing, we are poised for long-term growth.”

In April, the Morganton plant opened an additional 100,000 square feet of production and warehouse areas, aiming to increase capacity to 70% more seats per day by the end of the year. Additionally, the plant has hired more than 50 full-time employees for various positions.

“This expansion has many benefits for the North American business, and it will certainly set us apart from our competitors who only manufacture or source overseas,” said Randy Tallent, President of JE Ekornes USA.

“North America is the largest market for Ekornes’ global business in terms of revenue and sales potential,” said Bjerregaard. “Our Stressless business is thriving, and this expansion is a very positive demonstration of the company’s dedication and support to our market, retail partners and consumers here in the United States, Canada and Mexico.”

Currently, the Morganton operation also produces all Stressless sofas sold in North America, including motion sofas, as well as Stressless dining chairs, ottomans and accessories. The company also offers a fast tilt ship/stock program from its New Jersey warehouse.

JE Ekornes opened in 2012 and is located at 115 Wamsutta Mill Rd, Morganton, NC 28655. This was Ekornes’ first major manufacturing facility outside of Norway.

According to the company, Ekornes is Norway’s largest furniture manufacturer and owns the brands Ekornes, Stressless, Svane and IMG. Ekornes sells its products in 43 countries, has 18 sales offices in 11 countries, manages more than 4,000 points of sale and operates 10 production units in four countries with 2,200 employees.
